When you glide into the harbor of the Greek island of Hydra, whether aboard a luxurious private vessel or a more humble public ferry, one thing is certain: you won't miss the "Guilty."

Designed by Ivana Porfiri and painted by Jeff Koons in the style of early 20th-century dazzle camouflage, this vibrant superyacht commands attention with its jagged lines and geometric swatches of yellow, pink, and blue. Originally intended to confound the telescopic vision of German U-boats during World War I, the dazzle patterns now serve a different purpose—announcing the presence of billionaire Greek Cypriot industrialist, art collector, and hotelier Dakis Joannou in any given port.

British dazzle camouflage, also known as razzle dazzle (in the U.S.). Used during World War I and to a lesser extent in WWII.

Hydra, particularly in the early days of summer, becomes a hub for a certain sphere of the art world, drawn to the 83-year-old collector's Deste Foundation and its project space nestled in a former slaughterhouse on the hillside. Joannou's orbit includes artist-provocateurs like Jeff Koons, Maurizio Cattelan, and George Condo, whose works pepper his collection of some 1,500 objects, as well as figures like former auction rainmaker Loic Gouzer and the multifaceted Kenny Schachter.

The genesis of the "Guilty's" eye-catching razzle-dazzle paint job is a testament to the collaborative spirit that infuses Joannou's endeavors. Upon Jeff Koons' holiday visit to Hydra, Joannou presented him with the boat's plans, seeking ideas for its exterior. Koons, without hesitation, suggested razzle dazzle, a concept Joannou was unfamiliar with at the time. After a quick internet search and a subsequent conversation with Porfiri, who had independently conceived the same idea, Joannou embraced the suggestion wholeheartedly. The result? A mesmerizing fusion of art and maritime tradition that continues to captivate onlookers.

The artistic flair extends beyond the boat's exterior. Inside, Joannou has curated a collection of artworks specifically designed for the vessel, with input from esteemed figures like Cecilia Alemani and artists such as David Shrigley and Martin Creed, who have left their mark on the guest rooms and living spaces. The ever-evolving collection reflects Joannou's dynamic approach to art curation, where established names mingle with lesser-known talents in a vibrant dialogue.

At his Athens home, Joannou recently welcomed guests to witness another facet of his artistic vision—a rehang of his permanent collection. What began as an homage to artists from the '80s evolved into a vibrant installation incorporating contemporary works, demonstrating Joannou's commitment to keeping his collection alive and engaging.

In the world of Dakis Joannou, art transcends traditional boundaries, infusing every aspect of life with creativity and expression. From the dazzling exterior of the "Guilty" to the carefully curated artworks within, Joannou's passion for art knows no bounds, making waves both on land and at sea.
